Oh Good, More Conference Talk

Dear Everyone,

Either we will or won’t be invited to a major sports conference in the coming weeks. Whether or not that happens is entirely out of our control, because while we have earned such a promotion based upon athletic achievement, we haven’t earned such a promotion based on money. Whether or not we’d like to admit it, it is that last thing (money) that’s driving all of this. West Virginia doesn’t have the money that other places do. That’s true whether or not we’ve won two BCS games (we have) and made a Final Four appearance (we have). That’s true whether or not our fans are loyal (they are) and whether or not they’re as good as other fans (they are). The grim reality is that a small cabal of powerful people will make decisions that will render our football program potent or impotent and no amount of complaining about this in my office, at my coffeeshop, in my living room, or on my phone will change it.

So perhaps we ought to entertain ourselves with other things, like this weekend’s upcoming game against Syracuse, a game in which the Mountaineers have the potential to go absolutely ballistic on offense. I have come to this conclusion after watching the team go absolutely ballistic against Bowling Green in the wind and in the rain and in the cold, three things which aren’t happening inside Syracuse’s domed stadium.

Friday’s offensive output is what I’m looking forward to, as I do every week, as I patiently wait for the week where we start with our foot on the pedal and end our with our pedal on the road making sparks.

Sincerely,
Me
