Vote-By-Mail An Even More Overwhelming Success
Jim Manilla and Wesley Nugent have what I would describe as a problem: they publicly opposed Morgantown’s Vote By Mail program, something that ended up working quite well. This problem has only been exacerbated by statewide election analysis, which has revealed that voter participation is either stagnant or falling in everywhere but Morgantown. Let me be clear: citizen participation in...

Moments in Mountaineer Tweeting (#9)
John Flowers kids. He’s trying to educate: Nvr dance wit a girl that’s wearing a bikini and u only have on swim trunks…jus don’t do it lol Let’s chalk that up to lessons I wish I’d been forced to learn. (Also, some other Mountaineer had better step up his game. John Flowers absolutely dominates the WVU Twitter game right now.)

Dana Holgorsen as "The Gambler"
In honor of the recent Holgorsen incident a song parody from The City of Morgantown, sung to the tune of “The Gambler” On a warm mid-May evenin’, at the Mardi Gras Casino I met up with a guy who had Phil Collins’ physique. So we played blackjack till midnight while we drank our Ketel Red Bulls. When the buzz it overtook us, he began to speak.   He said, “Son,...

Marcellus Gas Wells Move in Near Morgantown's...
News of the Marcellus Shale is slightly more current than the Devonian period, during which this massive layer of shale was formed. Below that dense layer of shale lie vast pockets of Natural Gas, which in 2008 Penn State Geologists conservatively estimated as enough to supply the entire country’s current needs for 14 years. Seems like it could be a win for the Mountain State, right?  Well,...

A City Bereft of Journalism, a Modest Proposal,...
As anybody living in Morgantown for any length of time can tell you, ours is a city without journalism. Maybe that isn’t accurate. Ours is a city without substantive journalism. This is true at every conceivable outpost where journalism might be occurring. The Dominion Post is utterly useless, given that it is owned by the Raese Family, a group of people significantly invested in getting...

Heavy Rains Overwhelm Sabraton
Heavy rains earlier tonight entirely overwhelmed Sabraton. All of the stopgaps at the bottom of Hartman Run Road clogged, pushing cascading water up over the banks, covering the roads, flooding out the car dealership, the strip mall where Rio Grande and Pizza Al’s II are, and swamping 84 Lumber. Very stunning scene that developed very quickly.

Kevin Jones Returns! (...and Yet Another Schism!)
It is almost impossible to keep up with the shifting standards that Mountaineer fans have for themselves. I know that we’re supposed to be loyal (“Support your team!”). We’re also supposed to not be loyal (“Bill Stewart is a douchebag that has to be fired!”). We’re supposed to have standards (“Bill Stewart’s nine wins per year aren’t...

Who Is Going To Be Morgantown's New Mayor?
Once, I studied for a degree in political science. I wasn’t cut out for it though, mostly because I’m terrible at mathematics, which is all political science is anymore. Knowing the angles? That isn’t part of a formal degree anymore. Too bad - I’d like to think I’m good at teasing out those angles. Which leads me to this: Morgantown’s going to have a new mayor...

Calm Down West Virginia University
Breaking news alert: Osama Bin Laden is dead. That news rolled through our lives last night. It was stunning in every imaginable way. I took the news like I’d been punched in the chest, sitting in front of my television, drinking coffee, and waiting for President Obama to address the nation. But even from my home high atop South Park, I could hear the definitive sounds of celebration....
